What is 5-Axis CNC Machining?

5-axis CNC machining is a manufacturing process that involves using computer numerical control (CNC) technology to control the movement of five axes on a machine tool. These axes are typically the X, Y, and Z linear axes, as well as two additional rotary axes that are perpendicular to the other three. 5-axis machining is unique in its ability to effectively process part sizes and shapes with essentially infinite possibilities.

5-axis machining centers eliminate several inadequacies of conventional CNC machining techniques, including multiple setups, part transfers and inspections; part handling, and errors associated with human involvement/interference. With 5-axis CNC machining, a workpiece can be machined from multiple angles and with a high level of precision. This type of machining is often used in the production of complex shapes or parts with intricate details, such as aerospace and automotive components, medical implants, and molds for plastic injection molding.

To perform 5-axis CNC machining, a machine tool must be equipped with a CNC controller and special software that allows the operator to input the desired machining movements and tool paths. The machine tool may also be equipped with additional features such as a rotary table or trunnion, which allows for the rotation of the workpiece about one or more axes.

Overall, 5-axis CNC machining offers a high level of versatility and precision in the manufacturing process, and is increasingly being used in a wide range of industries to produce complex and intricate parts. The skilled and highly experienced CNC machinists and programmers at Owens Industries are capable of machining complex shapes, undercuts and complicated angles – all in one setup to boot.

5-Axis Machining Materials

Owens Industries has extensive experience manufacturing component parts from different materials using 5-axis machining:

 Alloy Steel

An iron and carbon composition with other elements intentionally added, including manganese, chromium, vanadium, nickel, or tungsten. Alloy steels are typically divided into two categories: high alloy and low alloy.

aluminum 5 axis machining  Aluminum

A high-quality silver metal that’s soft, lightweight, and durable. Aluminum is commonly used for 5-axis CNC machining in military and aerospace applications.

5-axis machined brass parts  Brass

An alloy comprised of copper and tin, it offers a wide range of properties such as high ductility, hardness, thermal conductivity, strength, and workability. Bronze is often used to manufacture nuts, bolts, threaded parts, bearings, bushings, screws, and more.

bronze 5 axis machining Bronze

An alloy comprised of copper and tin, it offers a wide range of properties such as high ductility, hardness, thermal conductivity, strength, and workability. Bronze is often used to manufacture nuts, bolts, threaded parts, bearings, bushings, screws, and more.

5-axis machining with carbon steel  Carbon Steel

A metal alloy of carbon and steel, but could also contain nickel, copper, or manganese. Carbon steel is commonly used for axles, gears, shafts, rails, pipelines, couplings, and more.

Copper components using 5-axis machining Copper

A common metal used in manufacturing electrical equipment such as wiring and motors. Copper requires specialized processes for manufacturing, meaning copper alloys are more common in machining components.

Stell machined components using 5-axis machining  Hardened Steel

Medium or high carbon steel that has been given heat treatment to temper it, or increases the toughness of the steel. How hard the steel becomes depends on the amount of carbon present in the metal, and it’s typically used to make power shovels, nozzles, surgical instruments, and other manufactured parts.

5 axis machined components using Hastelloy Hastelloy

A strong nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum alloy that is resistant to corrosion. Hastelloy steel is often used to manufacture contour rings, rings, hubs, flanges, shafts, and other manufactured products.

5-Axis Machining FAQs

5-axis CNC machining refers to the use of computer numerical control (CNC) technology to control the movement of a machine tool that has five axes of motion. These axes are typically labeled as X, Y, Z, A, and B, and they correspond to linear motion along the X, Y, and Z axes, as well as rotary motion about the A and B axes. This allows for greater flexibility in the manufacturing process, as it enables the machine tool to access and machine parts from multiple angles and orientations.
A 5-axis CNC machine works by using computer-aided design (CAD) software to create a 3D model of the desired object. The machine then uses this model to guide its movements as it cuts or shapes the material. The machine has five axes of motion, allowing it to move in a variety of directions and angles.
5-axis machining is used for the production of complex and intricate parts that require multiple angles to be machined in a single setup. It is often used in the aerospace, automotive, and medical industries where precision and efficiency are critical. 5-axis machining allows for the creation of parts with complex geometries, such as internal and external contours, holes, and slots, as well as parts with multiple planes and angles. It is also used for the production of small and intricate parts, such as dental implants and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS).
The advantage of a 5-axis CNC machine is that it can move and operate in five different axes, allowing for greater flexibility and precision in machining complex shapes and contours. It can also work on multiple sides of a workpiece simultaneously, reducing the need for multiple setups and increasing productivity. Additionally, a 5-axis CNC machine can reduce the need for manual intervention and increase the accuracy and consistency of the finished product.
3-axis machining involves movement along three axes: the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis. These axes correspond to the three dimensions of a workpiece: length, width, and depth. With 3-axis machining, a tool can move in any direction along these three axes to shape or cut a workpiece. 5-axis machining involves movement along an additional two axes: the a-axis and b-axis. The a-axis allows the tool to rotate around the x-axis, while the b-axis allows it to rotate around the y-axis. This allows for more complex and precise machining operations, as the tool can move and rotate in multiple dimensions to create intricate shapes and contours.

5-Axis Machining Services Set Owens Apart from the Competition

We have consistently delivered remarkable results using our 5-axis machining services. Some of the projects we have delivered include things such as prescription glass moldings, precision collimators, ventricular assist devices, and a lot more.

An example of our 5-axis precision machine work includes keratomes for LASIK surgery. A Keratome is used to slice a 165 microns (.006496") thick slice off the cornea of the eye. This slice had to be +/- 5 micron accurate! We produced the entire cutting head system using our 5 Axis Ultra-Precision Machining Centers and our 5 Axis Wire EDM system.
